An experiment created by Piscataway High School engineering students for the NASA TechRise Student Challenge launched into the stratosphere on Friday, July 21.

The device designed and built at PHS was the lone representative from New Jersey among 30 from around the country that were lifted into suborbital flight by a high-altitude balloon. The flight launched from Hurley, SD; rose to about 70,000 feet; and lasted 7 hours 42 minutes.

The launch was livestreamed on YouTube by Future Engineers. The video featured representatives of NASA Flight Opportunities and Aerostar.

The Piscataway experiment, created by a seven-person team, is titled, “Decreased Stratospheric Ozone’s Agrarian Impact.” The team submitted a detailed proposal to NASA explaining their experiment and were chosen to take part. Their device was designed to detect ozone levels in the stratosphere as well as gauge the impact on agriculture on the ground.
