PHS SADD sees potential consequences at junk yard, police station

Members of the Piscataway High School Students Against Destructive Decisions took an enlightening field trip Wednesday, April 9, that illustrated the consequences of dangerous behavior behind the wheel. The first stop was Logan’s Towing in North Brunswick, where they saw crashed cars and equipment used to tow vehicles after fatal and non-fatal crashes. Next, they went to the Piscataway Police Department, where they toured a jail cell, courtroom, and the 9-1-1 dispatch center. Students with driver’s licenses got to drive golf carts wearing goggles that simulate drunken driving, and students without driver’s licenses underwent field sobriety tests wearing the goggles. Both experiences illustrated how alcohol impairs the senses. Everyone in the group got to use a driving simulator under different road conditions. The day was hosted and coordinated by Piscataway Traffic Safety Division Officers William Kloos, Ian Paglia, and Mark Chanley. The students were accompanied by SADD adviser Laura Benjamin.
