September 2014 Message

September 2014

Welcome to the 2014-15 school year. I truly hope that the summer break gave all of you opportunities to re-connect with your children, family and friends, see a different part of the state, listen to the waves, find a chance to read a great book, listen to an outdoor concert, or visit an amusement park.

All of these activities actually reflect a family initiative in our school district that you will hear more about, Piscataway STRONG. Simply, it is a Board of Education effort that encompasses health and wellness in its broadest sense of the word. It means that we will renew our commitment to raising children who have strong bodies and minds, to heighten their awareness of their strengths and abilities, and to help them adopt healthy behavior patterns.

Piscataway STRONG will reinforce what we already do - health and fitness instruction and opportunities, character education, and role modeling. But these efforts will be supplemented by school and community-wide efforts that assist our young people in developing a STRONG self-image, and bodies, hearts, and minds that help them achieve their goals.

At the high school, for example, we will launch 50 STRONG, a mentoring program for young men that is being coordinated by social studies teacher L-Mani Viney. At Quibbletown Middle School, physical education teacher James Overton is applying for an additional grant to complete a fitness trail and room that will promote wellness among all students. At the elementary schools, parent organizations have a series of family fun events that are designed to strengthen bond between parent and child, these are all listed on our school district calendar. In our middle schools, school nurses are taking steps to work with students at risk of developing diabetes.

In other words, Piscataway STRONG takes our educational efforts a step further beyond the classroom; it encompasses a community effort that teaches health and wellness in its holistic sense.

I look forward to taking this journey with you, greeting you at our upcoming back to school nights, and continuing our partnership towards a community that is Piscataway STRONG!‚Äč
