Brenda Smith is a 33 year resident of Piscataway. She and her late  husband, Harry Wrightrelocated from Edison with her adult children and later resided there with their grandchildren after her son's death. The grandchildren, now adults, all attended Piscataway schools at some point.

Brenda attended Kean College, now named Kean University of NJ and received a BA degree in History and Political Science. She received her JD degree from Seton Hall University. Her first job as a lawyer ultimately became her career. Prior to attending college, her interest in public interest law had manifest itself during her employment at the Newark Legal Services Corp., where legal issues of the indigent became her passion.

As a result, her career as a trial attorney for those unable to afford counsel was born. During her legal career, she advanced to become Deputy of the Somerset County Trial Region and later the Middlesex County Trial Region, the second largest in the State. She served on Supreme Court Committee for Criminal Law and the Judicial and Prosecutors Appointments Committee for Middlesex County. She was a member of the State Bar Association, the Middlesex County Bar Association, the Garden State Bar Association and the Association of Black Women Lawyers throughout her legal career. She served on two Inns of Court Committees which produce forums for new attorneys to discuss routine as well as novel legal issues of the day.  Brenda retired from practice after 27 years of a very gratifying legal career.

Brenda has served on the Piscataway Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Piscataway Planning Board, currently as Chairwoman, and the Piscataway Civil Right Commission. She has been an active member of No. Stelton AME Church in Piscataway for the last 30 years.
